Dear AITO Colleagues

“The Business of Tourism”

Local Government Tourism Conference 2010
Expressions of Interest to present a case study pertinent to the program

Continuing on with our successful conference program highlighting to council mayors, general managers and tourism operational staff the benefits of tourism, the conference will be hosted by Cowra Shire Council and will take place from Wednesday 10 – Friday 12 March 2010. The main conference venue will be the Cowra Civic Centre. Over the past six years, the conference has delved into themes pertaining to tourism infrastructure, tourism investment, tourism communication and has moved regionally from Forbes to Penrith, Griffith, Lismore and Kiama.

In conjunction with Tourism New South Wales and our industry partners and sponsors, and in recognition of Local Government’s strong engagement with tourism, the theme of the conference next year is ‘The Business of Tourism’. The draft program will explore funding including a feisty debate on levying businesses to fund local tourism, marketing (pertaining to integrated planning and reporting) and identifying and developing cultural tourism:

The State Governments strategy that regional tourism organisations will be self-funding in three years
Funding opportunities and expectations at local, state and federal levels
Why should councils fund tourism as a business (as opposed to other industries)?
Creative and collaborative funding options
Marketing your front line
Social Marketing (blogs, YouTube, Twitter, other media) and its applications
Marketing models for VICs
Identifying and developing cultural assets
Hands on workshop to identify the marketing strategy, funding partnerships and community involvement for the Cowra POW Campsite, also your site inspection destination

The Associations are inviting expressions of interest from councils wishing to provide speakers and present case studies, or take up sponsorship opportunities (including trade displays) that relate to the theme, intention and program outline of the conference.

The program would like to showcase examples of councils who have successfully applied for funding with successful results, pitching for partnership funding or working collaboratively with other councils and industry stakeholders in sharing resources and funding, and creative examples of securing funding. We are also looking for great examples of ‘Innovation in Tourism’ for a special highlights section of the program.

A short outline of your proposed topic or presentation needs to be received by the Associations office.

The expected audience of approximately 200 will comprise councillors and council professionals representing areas of tourism, events, marketing, economic development, planning, infrastructure and services. The conference will also be attended by representatives of Tourism NSW, Tourism Industry Council and other agencies and the tourism industry.

Registration forms will be sent to all councils early in 2010 but if your council is interested in participating in the program, please contact the Associations Manager Events and Protocol, Meg Fisher, on 9242 4044 or meg.fisher@lgsa.org.au.
